Let’s show them that we are an independent nation, we’d rather face death
and die in honour than to lose our Independence.

The Independent Leader spoke from the radio that could be heard all over the
cities that night, 9 September 1964, a voice urging and uplifting the spirit of
the nation heroes and people to fight back the attack from the opponent at
dawn.

Rosli, 35 and Seman 33 were lifelong childhood friends. They were waiting for
dawn to protect their motherland from the attack of the Indonesian armies.

Seman, a trishaw peddler’s son, owed his life to Rosli when he was attacked
by the Japanese army at their village. Rosli who had leadership trait in him
was only a son of a tailor.

They had been combined force with several other villagers by the army to
protect their village. Not only to chase them away but they must also capture
the opponents army or simply shoot to kill.

With adequate ration, they kept guard in turns and slept under small tents at
the north part of the village on top of the hillside.

Seman who just got married 3 days ago to Zaiton had started to feel that he
should not be there and he missed his wife terribly, meanwhile Rosli kept
talking about death awaiting ahead and he was proud if he had to die
protecting his nation.

To find his peace of mind, Seman decided to write to his love out there,
although he knew that he wouldn’t be able to deliver it, but at least it could be
a healer for his loneliness while waiting for the time to fulfill his Hijr.
